Metric Rational:

Self‐regulated problem‐solving is the capacity to plan, monitor, evaluate, and adapt one’s own approach to tackling a challenge, without requiring continuous external guidance. In humans, this becomes evident whenever we set personal goals, devise strategies, keep track of our progress, recognize pitfalls or suboptimal methods, and adjust course to improve outcomes. For instance, a student writing an essay may begin by outlining ideas, notice early on that a certain argument is weak, revise the outline, and ultimately refine the draft—demonstrating self‐regulation at each step.

For an AI or humanoid robot, self‐regulated problem‐solving involves similar cognitive loops: setting internal objectives, devising an operational plan, tracking intermediate successes or errors, and modifying the plan if it fails to produce the desired result. This autonomy is built on metacognitive processes—awareness of one’s current state of knowledge, the complexity of the task, and the strategies available to proceed. Rather than a static, one‐shot approach, the AI iteratively tests potential solutions, learns from partial successes or failures, and updates internal models or heuristics.

A central element of self‐regulated problem‐solving is planning: the system lays out a sequence of steps or a combination of algorithms to reach a specified goal. This plan includes resource considerations (e.g., time, memory, battery life), possible bottlenecks, and fallback strategies if a particular path proves unproductive. Another element is monitoring: the AI checks intermediate results or sensor feedback to confirm whether the plan is on track. If the gap between expected and actual outcomes grows too large, self‐regulation kicks in: the AI may revise which subgoals to tackle first, switch to a more robust algorithm, or consult a knowledge base for further clues.

Key to this process is evaluation: an agent that cannot judge its own performance accurately may keep applying ineffective methods. Self‐regulation demands that the AI has a sense of performance metrics (such as solution correctness, resource usage, or error rates) and recognizes when it is plateauing, backsliding, or nearing a better solution. A well‐regulated system systematically logs its attempts, identifies patterns in failures, and uses that data to improve future planning. This can manifest as “strategy switching,” where an AI initially tries a fast but risk‐prone approach, then swaps to a slower yet more precise method if early signs show too many errors.

Finally, adaptation completes the cycle. In dynamic or unpredictable environments, an AI must re‐plan if external conditions change or new constraints emerge. This adaptive pivot often stems from the system’s own analysis of partial progress—figuring out that a once‐optimal route is now blocked, or that a newly discovered resource can expedite a different approach. By demonstrating these iterative adjustments in real time, the system shows it is not merely executing a fixed script but actively regulating its path to success.

Measuring self‐regulated problem‐solving involves observing how effectively, efficiently, and flexibly the entity reorganizes tasks, revises methods, and manages resources in the face of uncertainties or intermediate failures. Mastery in this metric indicates that the AI or robot can function robustly and autonomously, exploring creative paths while keeping sight of overarching goals and constraints.
